Advent and Calendars

This morning as I was browsing my blog roll I came across a guest post from Jen at Mum in The Madhouse, the post was written for Pippa from A Mothers Ramblings back in 2011 and was talking about Christmas Traditions.

Jen says "I do not want Christmas to be all about commercialism, but rather a time where we pull together as a family. I didn't want advent just to be a countdown to Christmas day, but to let them know that each day is special in its own right...I hope they grow up to understand that advent is all about family, not the chocolates from the calendar and cherish the fun and togetherness we have..."

This sums up my feelings almost exactly about Christmas and the countdown to it. For me, as a Christian, Christmas is all about celebrating the birth of Christ and being together as a family to do this. For the past 7 years I've been searching for an advent calendar that would serve as a centre piece for our count down during the festive season, and for the past 7 years I've failed!

I really really don't want to just give my girls a chocolate Hello Kitty or Tree Fu Tom one as I don't feel there is any resemblance to our values at Christmas. I'm determined that this year, as both girls are old enough to experience the magic and joy, is going to be different. This year I am going to make something that allows us to come together as a family, centres our thoughts and actions around Christ, and gives us the daily chocolate fix! I've started pinning several I like the look of on Pinterest and have been coming up with activities we can do as a family each day.

I'm really looking forward to getting creative and seeing what we come up with, if its good enough I might even show you all!
